In this podcast, occupational therapist Kelly Mahler talks about the eighth sensory system – Interoception. This is our ‘inside’ sense that alerts us to sensations such as thirst, hunger, needing to go to the bathroom and feeling hot or cold. It helps us to identify feelings through their physical sensations (think butterflies in your stomach for nervousness) and is crucial for our ability to self-regulate. This discussion talks about the interplay between interoception and anxiety and can give parents that ‘a-ha’ moment if they have struggled to understand the possible reasons behind their child’s anxiousness.
