“At Kaleidoscope Therapy Group, which runs diverse programmes for children with various special needs including behavioural therapy and early intervention services, demand for its Nivaa home tuition programme is “exploding”, according to its chief executive, Dr Bipin Bhola.

From January to August, the number of children enrolled in his tuition services rocketed from 30 to 200 and his centre has fielded 1,300 inquiries about these services in the same time frame, says Dr Bhola. A 90-minute session costs $120.

He adds: “Being Singapore, parents are more worried about academics. But the tuition has to be tailored to the child; these teachers have to know the child’s needs. We see the children flourishing if they get help early.”

For example, if children with autism have been used to much smaller groups in pre-school and in early intervention programmes, they face “sensory overload” when they enter primary school and join a class of around 30 pupils.

He also notes that many of the children start enrolling in tuition provided by his centre in lower primary school.

In addition, some children with dyslexia may be auditory learners, while others with ADHD may be visual learners who learn better with videos that are customised to their needs in tuition.
